Overview
WUE is the water counterpart to PUE. Where PUE measures how efficiently a facility turns incoming electricity into useful compute, WUE measures how much water it burns to do so, chiefly for cooling. A perfect score is 0.0 L/kWh, meaning no water consumed per unit of IT energy; typical evaporatively cooled facilities land well above that. The metric exists because cooling a dense compute floor has historically meant evaporating large volumes of water, and in water-stressed regions that cost can matter as much as the electricity bill.
How it works
WUE divides the water a facility consumes over a year by the energy delivered to its IT load. The figure is dominated by the cooling method: evaporative and water-cooled towers consume the most, air-based and closed-loop systems the least, and a facility that rejects heat straight to cool ambient air can approach zero. Two versions are often quoted: site WUE, counting only water used at the building, and source WUE, which also counts the water used to generate the electricity the site draws.
Why it matters
As clusters grow denser and hotter, water is becoming the constraint that decides where a data center can responsibly sit. A low WUE means a facility is not competing with agriculture and households for a scarce resource, which increasingly determines whether a site can be permitted and run at all. It is the number that tells you whether compute is being bought at the expense of the local water table.
