Overview
GPU density is a measure of how much compute is packed into a given physical footprint. A GPU-dense cluster pushes that number as high as the facility allows, many GPUs per node and many nodes per rack, instead of scattering hardware thinly across a data hall. Density is not only an efficiency play: GPUs that sit physically close can be wired together with shorter, faster links, so packing them tightly makes distributed training faster as well as cheaper per rack.
How it works
Density is fundamentally a power and cooling problem. A single rack of current GPU systems can draw 40 to 80kW, many times the load of a traditional server rack, and every watt of that becomes heat that has to be removed before it throttles the hardware. A dense cluster is therefore only as viable as the facility beneath it: high-density power delivery to each rack, and a cooling design matched to the heat that density produces. Get either wrong and the GPUs quietly clock themselves down.
Why it matters
Concentrating GPUs is what turns a pile of accelerators into an efficient cluster. Short NVLink and InfiniBand paths between nearby GPUs raise multi-GPU scaling efficiency, and using costly facility space tightly lowers the cost of every unit of compute. The catch is that density is capped by physics: you can only pack in what you can power and cool, which is why a genuinely dense cluster is a statement about the facility as much as the hardware.
